A mixed-use building is to be built at an urban interface in Hamburg. The concept includes a market hall, a library and residential housing, with the aim of combining public and private functions.

How can this mix of public and private offerings be designed so that each use works on its own while at the same time creating a communal anchor point for the surrounding neighborhood that both strengthens the local community and revitalizes the urban space?

The building is geared to the specific conditions of the location in order to ensure optimal accessibility for each function. Care is taken to ensure that each use meets its requirements and can develop in its dimensions. At the same time, the entire building should integrate harmoniously into the existing environment.

The property is located in Altona-Nord, between a commercial and a residential area. Commercial halls are located to the northwest, a road junction to the southeast, and the residential area is opposite. The building is oriented so that it follows the path of the sun. The market hall on the ground floor is accessible via three entrances: in the south, northeast and northwest. The stalls are arranged in such a way that a flowing tour is possible without dead ends. Each entrance offers sight lines that allow visitors to quickly find their way around. The catering area and shops in the south connect the hall with the surrounding area, while toilets and other shops are located in the north and northeast. The stalls are three meters deep, the aisle between the stalls is two meters wide, so that visitors have enough space.

The library extends over two floors. Access is via an external staircase, an internal staircase or an elevator. The information desk, cloakrooms and toilets are located in the foyer. The open access area on the first floor offers a wide view of the library and leads to seminar rooms to the north and a café to the south. Large windows provide access to the terrace, which is used for the café and workshops. The open access area to the west and offices to the north are clearly separated. The open access area continues on the second floor, with seating and reading areas to the south.

The residential units occupy the top five floors of the building. These are all duplex apartments, accessed via open corridors on the northern side. Some apartments are accessible from top to bottom, while others are from bottom to top. The units are open to the west, offering flexible sizes (40–120 m²) and are oriented north-south. Each apartment has a south-facing balcony and a central service core. The bedrooms are located on the level without the corridor for more privacy, while the public areas are situated along the corridor. Starting from the third floor, setbacks on the eastern side create large terraces with direct sunlight for the larger apartments.
